One Mile Closer was founded by friends and family of adventurers Rob Gauntlett and James Atkinson, who died in a climbing accident on Mont Blanc on January 9th 2009.
Rob and James achieved more in their 21 years than many of us dream in a lifetime, and they devoted their time to assisting and inspiring others, including many schoolchildren, to challenge themselves, follow their dreams and believe in possibility and opportunity.
Inspired by Rob and James’ adventurous spirit, over 100 cyclists of all ages, abilities and nationalities have challenged themselves over thousands of miles to raise money for Nalango Secondary School in Uganda. Our One Mile Closer peloton has ridden:
- John O’Groats to Land’s End, UK, 2009
- Mont Ventoux to Sussex, UK, 2012
- Prague, Czech Republic to Sussex, UK, 2014
- Sea to Sky in Korea, 2015
- Pedal Home from the Pyrenees, 2016
In 2017 we will ride from Seoul to Busan in Korea, and return to Europe in 2018 for a jaunt from Spain to Turin, Italy, via Mont Ventoux and the Col de la Bonette (Europe’s highest through road) – please contact us if you would like to join the team.
